'Philanthropic retailing' give me such pleasure. So imagine my delight when I found a beautiful, scarf company that manufactures in Cambodia and is committed to improving the lives of the wonderfully skilled artisans that make their scarves, AND their children! This company only employs those over the age of 18, pays a fair wage and allows people to work from home if this suits them. Best of all, for every scarf that we sell they will pay for 2 day's schooling for a local child !
The scarves themselves - or Krama to give them their correct Cambodian name - are stunning, the pattern a complex combination of concentric diamonds which is traditionally worn to ceremonies and festivals at the Royal Palace. Each is woven entirely by hand - a scarf takes a day to complete - and we are supporting a team of 25 weavers. Made from 100% (thick) cotton, which has a lovely soft pile, these scarves are incredibly warm and plump. Colours are glorious; Royal Blue, Coral Orange, Red, Forest Green, Bordeaux and Pink
The icing on the cake is the fact that each scarf comes in its very own, matching, tubular box, woven from palm leaves by a team of twelve highly-skilled women! I was thinking that these make the perfect gift as they do not need to be wrapped!
