I have been collecting hobnail, milk glass from the US for many years. Manufactured by Fenton, in West Virginia, from 1939, I have quite an eclectic selection (currently residing in France), and so was really thrilled when I found that the concept was being used by the finest glassmakers of Bohemia (now the Czech Republic), to create a classic jug, and we have been stocking these beauties for three seasons. However, I have now discovered another studio that has widened the remit to include a tall, slim jug - the shape is similar to those used in the traditional basin/ewer combination - and an exquisite bowl. These pieces are iconic and truly beautiful, but once again it was the colours that seduced, and I have indulged (unashamedly!), purchasing some delicate hues (including lilac, violet and citrine) as well as sophisticated tones like olive and smoke. I am completely unsure where to start in terms of my own acquisition but think that a bowl in 'smoke' might kick-start the process nicely! This collection straddles contemporary/traditional styling with aplomb, and consequently will grace any interior - so it's a safe, gift choice too!
