One of my favourite occupations is discovering talented artisans and I am determined to look a little closer to home this year. British designer/makers are really exploding at the moment and it makes me very happy to work with them on exclusive collections for us and shine a spotlight on their incredible abilities.
One such artist is Janette Garthwaite, a glassmaker with a visionary sense of form and colour. Her studio in Brixton, South London, is a slice of paradise for art glass enthusiasts like me and I love to spend time learning about the way glass pigments behave and that light refracts and reflects through them. I have owned a bowl made by Janette for some years and it is one of my favourite possessions.
I have commissioned her to create two curved plates for us - one rectangular and the other square. They can be displayed simply for themselves as an objet d'art or used to house fruit or serve food - I used mine for sushi and it did add a drum roll to the dinner party!
These pieces are real showstoppers, formed by fusing stripes of different coloured glass together. The colour combination of blues & greens/reds & oranges and pinks & lilacs are utterly beautiful and glow when placed in sunlight. We are all thrilled to pieces with this unique collection and feel very fortunate indeed to work with such an amazing woman.
