Skogsberg & Smart - The Swedish duo behind this luxury collection, Magnus & Mimmi, have known each other for thirty years, and came up with an idea for a gorgeous, hurricane lamp. The inspiration came firstly because Sweden is dark for six months of the year and secondly because Swedish houses are built mostly from wood and therefore they wanted to burn candles and tea-lights safely!
And so I present to you the 'Boule' or bubble-glass collection, which reminds me so much of the Finnish designer Helena Tynell's iconic designs for Glashütte Limburg (Germany) made around 1960. This glass is mouth-blown into a mould to ensure perfection, and the effect is of hundreds of little balls or bubbles of glass joined together. These reflect and refract light, so once they house a candle the light from the flame literally dances across the surfaces. The concept is very 1960's in feel - clean, futuristic and slightly space-age, but with the unmistakable look and feel of luxury that Bohemian glass artists inevitably bring to the table and the simple beauty exemplified by the Swedes!
As you will also know I prefer versatile design, and so particularly enjoy the fact that, when not being used to light up your life, this piece can also be used as a posey vase!
