Cats, and some breeds in particular, are especially prone to kidney disease. Whilst some causes of feline kidney failure can be congenital often it is acquired, to keep your cat's kidneys healthy as long as possible, and avoid unnecessary stress on ageing kidneys, make sure your cat always has plenty of fresh water, always make sure your cat has access to a garden or clean litter tray whenever your animal requires it. It is recommended that you restrict the amount of dry food you feed your pet. Avoid phosphorous high foods such as all dairy products. It is also advised that you limit the use of toxins in your home. These are present in almost all commercially produced household products including detergents, cleaning agents, fabric fresheners and room sprays. Many contain phosphorous which is the most dangerous mineral as it speeds up destruction of you cats kidneys.
Of course it is not only the chemicals you use around your cat, it can also be the products that you use on your pet.

Brush your pet before washing. Fill a baby's bath or bath with just 4 to 5 inches of warm water with a rubber mat in the base. Plus 2 buckets with jugs of warm water for rinsing & several clean towels for drying. Soak the cat from the neck down, using a wet flannel with a small amount of "The Towel & The Pussycat" shampoo and wash your cat's neck, body, legs, tummy and tail. Be sure not to get shampoo in their eyes, nose, mouth, or ears. Rinse thoroughly with the water in the bath, then drain the bath and rinse two more times with clean warm water from the buckets. It is essential to remove all the soap from the coat. Let the water drip from the cat while gently pressing as much water as you can from the fur before you wrap your cat in the towel. Rub gently with one towel. When the first towel gets too wet to be effective, switch to the next dry towel. Don't stop until your cat is just damp. Try warming the towels in the dryer or on a heated towel rail first -- many cats find this comforting. Leave your pet in a nice warm place with a clean dry towel to sit on.
