Blackbird Pie Funnel
Sing a song of sixpence a pocket full of rye,
Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie.
When the pie was opened the birds began to sing,
Oh wasn't that a dainty dish to set before the king?
These days it's probably not a wise idea to bake 24 live blackbirds into a pie - guests and the RSPB tend to object - it is, however, extremely sensible to put one of these little ceramic birds in. They prevents the pie boiling over by venting steam through the beak and also acts as a support for the middle of the crust to stop it sagging.
